Probably the most used room in the house, the kitchen is not just for cooking but increasingly for eating and socialising. It is also one of the rooms, along with the bathroom, that has the most impact on the value of the house.
On this page we bring you a selection of companies who can enhance your kitchen and provide you with all sorts of kitchen furniture, appliances and gadgets, to reduce the effort that goes into making your kitchen a fun and productive place.
Kitchen cabinets
The other names that may come to mind when you think 'kitchen' probably sell other things as well. Kitchens Direct are one of the few companies that truly specialise in kitchens. They have a wide range of kitchen cabinets, worktops and appliances from the best reputed manufacturers. Browse the range online and for more information you can order a free illustrated brochure. You can also arrange a free home design visit.
Wickes have a wide selection of kitchen cabinets, together with cookers, hobs and extractors. You can see them on display in their showrooms, or order online for rapid free delivery. The pictures on the Wickes web site are rather small and it does not appear to be possible to enlarge them. B&Q also have a selection of cabinets and appliances on their web site and virtually everything can be ordered online. Be sure to use the 'enlarge' button to get a better image of the cabinets or check out one of their stores to choose the style and then order online when you know which combination of cabinets you want. There is a fair choice of appliances, but the range is not as good as from the appliance specialists featured on this page. Wickes have a leaflet giving advice on planning the kitchen. B&Q offer a design service.
Screwfix is not the sort of place you would immediately think of if you want to buy a kitchen. They do, however, have a good choice at the 'economy' end of the market and are worth considering, especially if you are planning to fit the kitchen yourself.
Kitchen Appliances
Appliance Deals and Appliances Online both supply built-in and freestanding cooking, refrigeration, laundry and dishwashing appliances. Their delivery costs vary but as delivery is a only small proportion of the total cost it is worth checking both companies for the total cost, including delivery, because the one with the higher delivery cost may be cheaper overall.
Biasco and Kitchen Science also sell appliances but in addition sell sinks, taps and electrical gadgets, including mixers, blenders, kettles and coffee machines. Probably the broadest selection comes from Biasco, who sell not only the appliances but the accessories too.
Appliance Direct only sell free-standing appliances but they also have fires and some audio, television and other small appliances that may be useful additions to the kitchen. By and large, and except for built-in appliances, they have a fairly wide selection in terms of the different kinds of things you can buy but not much choice within each type. They charge delivery for each item, not per order. The amount varies depending on the weight and on whether it takes one or two people. For example something that can be posted might be £1.49, but a lightweight appliance would be around £19.99 and a heavier appliance needing two people to deliver, such as a washing machine, £29.99. Worth checking in case they have a good deal on the thing you want but you are more likely to find it at one of the other appliance suppliers.
