If you can't wait for a CD to arrive in the post, 7digital sell legal downloads of all kinds of music - classical, pop, even middle of the road. Their arrangements are traditional - you pay per download.
The biggest download site of all must be iTunes, with over 6 million tracks. You can also download TV shows, videos, podcasts and even games.
Another download option comes from emusic. They offer a two week free trial, during which you can download up to 25 tracks free of charge. There is no commitment. You can cancel your membership, keep the 25 tracks and pay nothing. If you want to carry on, you pay a monthly subscription. There are three plans: for £8.99 per month you can download 30 tracks; for £11.99 you can download 50 and for £14.99 per month you get 75 - equivalent to about 20p per track. Emusic have 2 million tracks from independent labels including classical music, jazz, pop, indie, punk and undiscovered new artists but not all the big chart names.
Lovefilm are better known for DVD rentals but you can download some (but not all) of their titles too. Vizumi is also a film download site. You have the option to download for a limited time (download rental) for £2.99 or to download a film to keep from £4.99.
